I arrived in Pô mid-afternoon on the Rakieta bus from Ouagadougou. One alights downtown into a small bustling 'terminal' compound. I had one medium sized rucksack so could easily walk the kilometre to the Agoabem where I hoped to get a cheap room. The town is of mostly low 1-2 story buildings, a central market and mosque. It is about 15kms north of the Ghana frontier and has historically benefited by the north-south trade. It is still an important stop off point on the main road from Ouagadougou to Tamale and Accra, the Ghanaian capital beyond.
Pô is the capital of Nahouri province (population 150,000 (2006)), the main ethnic group is the Gurunsi. The Gurunsi themselves are divided into many sub-groups including: the Ko, Lyele, Nuni, Sisaala and Kassena. Many of these tribes are also present in northern Ghana.
In 2011 the province had 109 primary schools, 20 secondary schools, 3 doctors and 67 nurses.
